From Tex-Mex to museums, stockyards to skyline views, DFW is where Texas spirit meets endless exploration.

When people ask where I’m from, it is a tough answer. I am “from” Maine but knowingly so, I have been home to Dallas–Fort Worth for over 15 years now. It’s not just one city, it’s two personalities living side by side, each with its own flavor, culture, and charm. Since this is my very first post on Ellavated Travel, it feels right to start at home and share some of my favorite places to eat, explore, and shop in both Dallas and Fort Worth.

There are multiple neighborhoods that reside in Dallas alone that are worth the visit.

• Greenville Ave: there is no shortage of dining and drinking options here. Wabi House for an amazing Ramen dish, Leela’s Wine (mentioned below), Truck Yard a Dallas staple for live music and chill vibes. Whatever you are in the mood for, you can find a spot here.
• Knox/Henderson: a street both east and west of highway 75. On the east side you will find Henderson, becoming reimagined street where there is a lot of construction going on to build a vibrant shopping and dining center. Filled with bars and restaurants. Definitely worth trying out Gemma for a upscale seafood dinner, or a drink at the newer Local Public Eatery. On the west side is Knox, with plenty to eat and shop. Restoration Hardware has a beautiful rooftop restaurant, fresh catch oysters at Green Point, and Georgie. For shopping you have beautiful furniture like Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel and RH. If you head a little south you will find Origin Kitchen and Bar, one of my favorites for a organic, paleo and whole 30 options all from locally sourced farms.
• Bishop Arts: as it states, “artsy.” Park your car and walk around to find small shops, restaurants, and local events. Potpourri Boulangerie is a great place for high tea, Paradiso is one for the ladies, and Lucia is a small handmade Italian spot worth the reservation.
• Design District: a fun activity for the family would be at The Cookery, a cooking class. If you are looking for a special evening head to Evelyn steakhouse or my favorite Town Hearth where you will find a motorcycle on top of the bar, car by the kitchen and a submarine inside a fish tank. For a fun family style dinner and drinks, head to The Charles for an italian dinner and then to their speakeasy bar in the back for a nightcap.

Dallas

Where to Eat & Drink

Dallas has no shortage of incredible food, but here are a couple of my go-tos:

• Uchi – A must for sushi lovers. This upscale Japanese spot blends traditional flavors with modern creativity. The chef’s tasting menu is unforgettable.
• Written by the Seasons – A fun loving dining experience with a seasonal menu from ingredients grown that season.
• Rise No. 1 – Famous for their soufflés (savory and sweet), this cozy French-inspired restaurant feels like a hidden gem. Their marshmallow soup is a Dallas legend.
• Malai Kitchen – My favorite pad thai! Little bit of a twist, but this modern thai restaurant will have you loving all the flowers.
• Yao Fuzi – You have to go into the burbs for this one but it is so worth it. Family owned, one of a kind. The grandma makes the INSANE soup dumplings in the back to order. Paired with the crab fried rice, crispy beef and the off the menu green beans. Perfect. Great portions to share.

Cocktails would be Dallas’ middle name. Stop by the unique cocktail experiences at:

• Georgie – Sit at the bar and enjoy a unique treat with an elevated appetizer.
• Leela’s Wine Bar Lower Greenville – a fun seasonal menu full of wine and cocktails with a fun twist.
• The Skellig – Want to bring back your college days? Head to the Skellig for game days and an El Chapo! Don’t ask, just order.
• Terilli’s – The best martini, dirty martini there is.
• The Joule Speakeasy – Midnight Rambler – Feel like you are back in time from a underground bar with insane cocktails.

Coffee & Cafes

• Ascension Coffee – Cozy atmosphere, great breakfast bites, and smooth lattes — perfect for a slow start to the day.
• La La Land Kind Café – Known for its bright yellow accents, incredible matcha, and mission of kindness (they employ foster youth).
• Magnolias Sous Le Pont – Artsy, tucked-away, and a favorite for creatives. Their seasonal lattes are always fun to try.
• Wild Detectives – A book store taken coffee shop. Perfect spot to grab a cup and walk around the artsy Bishop Arts district.

Things to Do

• Perot Museum of Nature and Science – One of my absolute favorites in Dallas. It’s hands-on, kid-friendly, and just as fascinating for adults. From dinosaur fossils to space exhibits, there’s something for everyone.
• Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Garden – A gorgeous outdoor escape with seasonal displays, lakeside views, and the perfect picnic backdrop.
• Klyde Warren Park – A place for the kids with a large park in the center of downtown Dallas, hit with a giant splash pad, food trucks, and slides for the kids to play around on.
• Dallas Farmers Market – You don’t need to be here on the weekends to enjoy a farmers market. Dallas has an inside 10+ restaurant and market 7 days a week. Shop local and try multiple different options all in one spot.

Where to Shop

• NorthPark Center – More than just a mall, it’s an art-filled shopping destination with everything from luxury boutiques to classic stores.
• Bishop Arts District – A fun, walkable neighborhood packed with quirky shops, local boutiques, and great coffee spots.
• Highland Park Village – A luxury outdoor shopping center with top shops and restaurants. Visit during Christmas time and see the beautiful display of lights. Parking can be a little difficult here, so get there early on weekends.

  • Ritz Carlton Dallas – A newer property to Dallas set in the heart near downtown offering amazing views and amenities.
• MidScale
  • Hilton Anatole – A gorgeous outdoor escape that is great for kids with their waterpark and lazy river. Easy to get in and out, right off the highway.
• Budget
  • The Highland Dallas– A Hilton Curio Collection right along highway 75 just north of downtown.

Spa & Wellness

• Spa Habitat – With multiple locations, it is born in Dallas with a home like feeling. Their natural ingredients make for a lovely massage or facial.
• Spa at The Joule – Enjoy a full day at this beautiful luxury spa with Champagne, pools, hot tub available to you before and after your treatment.

Festivals & Events

• State Fair of Texas (Fall) – The ultimate Dallas tradition, complete with fried food experiments, carnival rides, and the iconic Big Tex.
• Dallas Blooms at the Arboretum (Spring) – A massive floral festival that makes the gardens explode with color.
• Deep Ellum Arts Festival (Spring) – Local art, music, and food in one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods.

Fort Worth

Where to Eat & Drink

Fort Worth has a more laid-back, western feel — and the food is just as memorable.

• Joe T. Garcia’s – A Fort Worth icon! The atmosphere is as unforgettable as the food. Order the fajitas, grab a margarita, and enjoy their massive patio, it feels like stepping into a Tex-Mex oasis.
• Heim Barbecue – Known for their bacon burnt ends (yes, they’re as good as they sound).
• Lonesome Dove – A truly unique experience with Southwestern meals and cowboy steakhouse set in the heart of the stockyards. A must try: Rabbit and Rattlesnake sausage.
• Spiral Diner and Bakery – Now hear me out. Vegan can be good and this place is doing it right. Lean into the vegan health food with a retro flare.
• Woodshed Smokehouse – Local outside dining along the river with live music and games. Laid back and dog friendly! Great for kids.

Drinks drinks!

• Thompson’s Bookstore – A classic speakeasy with high end cocktails and live music.
• Second Rodeo Brewing – This is for the beer lovers and game day watchers.
• The Usual – Prohibition cocktails with amazing mixologists.

Coffee & Cafes

• Avoca Coffee Roasters – A local favorite with a relaxed vibe and carefully roasted beans. Great for grabbing a cup before exploring the city.
• Craftwork Coffee Co. – Sleek, modern, and perfect if you need a caffeine boost and a place to get some work done.
• Sons of Liberty Coffee – Small, warm, and inviting, with a strong sense of community.

Things to Do

• Sundance Square – The heart of downtown Fort Worth. It’s lively, with restaurants, theaters, and fountains — perfect for a day or night out.
• Fort Worth Stockyards – A classic Texas experience. You can catch a cattle drive, explore the historic district, and soak up cowboy culture.
• Coyote Drive In – A drive in movie theatre! What more could you ask for.

Where to Shop

• West 7th Street District – A great mix of shopping, dining, and nightlife.
• Clearfork – An upscale shopping destination with boutiques, restaurants, and family-friendly vibes.

Festivals & Events

• Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (Winter) – A Texas classic with rodeo competitions, livestock shows, and cowboy culture at its best.
• Main Street Arts Festival (Spring) – One of the largest arts festivals in the country, filling downtown with music, food, and creativity.
• Concerts in the Garden (Summer) – Held at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, this series blends live symphonies with fireworks and picnics.
