One of the biggest misconceptions about Cancun is that it’s all the same destination. In reality, the area stretching from Cancun down through Riviera Maya offers completely different experiences depending on where you stay. This is especially true when it comes to Cancun and Riviera Maya Resorts, which each provide their own unique atmosphere and amenities.

After multiple trips to the region, my biggest piece of advice is simple: choose your resort carefully because your resort will become your destination. You cannot drink the water at all so I always spent the money on higher end resorts knowing that food safety was one of their top priorities along with safety.

Unlike some beach vacations where you spend your days exploring towns and hopping between restaurants, this is a place where many travelers never leave their property, and honestly, that’s exactly how I prefer it.

The beaches are beautiful, the resorts are incredible, and the all-inclusive experiences can be so good that you’ll never feel the need to venture out. In fact, I typically recommend skipping off-property excursions unless there’s something specific on your bucket list.

Instead, focus on finding the right area, booking a great resort, and arranging a private transfer from the airport.

First Things First: Skip the Hotel Zone

This may be controversial, but if you’re looking for a relaxing vacation, I’d personally skip Cancun’s Hotel Zone.

While it’s famous and packed with nightlife, restaurants, and large resorts, it can also feel crowded, busy, and tourist-heavy.

Instead, head south toward Playa Mujeres or Riviera Maya, where you’ll find larger properties, quieter beaches, and a much more elevated experience.

Understanding the Different Areas

Playa Mujeres

Approximately 40–50 minutes from Cancun International Airport

Located north of Cancun, Playa Mujeres feels worlds away from the crowds. The beaches are beautiful, the resorts are newer, and the atmosphere is far more relaxed.

This is my favorite area for couples and adults looking to truly unwind.

My Top Pick: Atelier Playa Mujeres

If I had to choose one resort to recommend above all others, it would be Atelier.

This adults-only luxury resort strikes the perfect balance between sophistication and relaxation. The food is exceptional, the pools are stunning, and the service consistently exceeds expectations. There is a ton to do such as golf, spa, dining and onsite classes.

It’s one of those places where you arrive, put your phone away, and immediately settle into vacation mode.

Riviera Cancun

Approximately 15–20 minutes from Cancun International Airport

If convenience matters, Riviera Cancun is one of the easiest areas to reach.

Haven Riviera Cancun

Haven is an adults-only all-inclusive that offers a luxury feel without some of the eye-popping prices found elsewhere.

You’ll find beautiful ocean views, excellent pools, and a more intimate atmosphere than many mega-resorts.

Riviera Maya

Approximately 45 minutes to 90 minutes from Cancun International Airport

This stretch of coastline extends south toward Playa del Carmen and beyond. It offers some of Mexico’s most luxurious resorts, larger properties, and beautiful beachfront settings.

One of the most luxurious all-inclusive resorts in North America.

Everything feels elevated: from the suites and spa to the dining experiences and service.

The One Thing I Always Recommend: Private Transportation

Cancun International Airport can be overwhelming when you arrive.

You’ll immediately encounter dozens of transportation companies, salespeople, and taxi offers.

My advice: arrange private transportation directly through your resort before arrival.

Most luxury properties offer this service, and it eliminates stress, confusion, and unexpected costs.

After a long travel day, having a driver waiting with your name on a sign is worth every penny.

Book the right property, arrange a private transfer, and let yourself settle into vacation mode. The turquoise water, warm weather, and incredible hospitality will do the rest.
