San Diego Travel Guide: Beaches, Dining, and History

San Diego is the perfect mix of surf, sunshine, and city sophistication. From the rugged coastline of La Jolla to rooftop dining in the Gaslamp, this city has something for every traveler. Here’s your guide to the best eats, experiences, and adventures in this San Diego travel guide. An example itinerary available for download below.

Things to Do in San Diego

  • La Jolla Cove – Swim, snorkel, or watch sea lions sunbathe. This location can smell a little with all the sea lions, but it is a must go. Weekends they have a market on the hill with local vendors.
  • Black’s Beach – A secluded beach reached by a steep trail, loved by surfers.
  • La Jolla Trail – Scenic hikes with ocean views. Easy to do, just be wearing comfy shoes.
  • Torrey Pines Hang Gliding – If you are up for an adventure, book a session here to hang glide over the cliff with an amazing view of the ocean.
  • Torrey Pines Golf Course – One of the most iconic golf courses in the U.S. This must be booked in advance as they book up very fast.
  • San Diego Zoo – One of the best in the world, with 650+ species and immersive habitats. Bring your comfy shoes as this zoo is spaced out and there will be a lot of walking but so worth seeing.
  • USS Midway Museum – A massive aircraft carrier museum on the waterfront.
  • Seaport Village – Waterfront shopping, dining, and entertainment.
  • Coronado Island – Spend a day at the legendary Hotel del Coronado, relax on wide sandy beaches, and even play a round of golf. It is iconic.
  • Temecula Wine Country (Day Trip) – Head an hour north to taste wines at Briar Rose, Akash Winery, Leoness Cellars, and Callaway Vineyard. Many vineyards will have lunch options such as Akash Winery with pizzas! Make sure you have a designated driver. We hired a party bus driver to take us out so no one had to worry about driving.

Where to Eat & Drink

La Jolla

  • Duke’s La Jolla – Hawaiian-inspired fare with coastal views. The coconut shrimp is heavenly.
  • Catania – Elevated Italian with ocean views.
  • Beeside Balcony La Jolla – Delicious Mediterranean food. They were very accommodating for my large group last minute. Drinks are stellar as well.
  • The Cottage – Nestled in a cute house, you will find delicious breakfast options.
  • Trilogy Sanctuary – Vegan, organic, rooftop café with yoga and aerial arts on the side.

Pacific Beach & Mission Beach

  • Waterbar – Seafood, cocktails, and epic sunsets over the ocean.
  • Firehouse Eatery – Trendy rooftop for brunch or nightlife.
  • Cannonball – Sushi and cocktails with unbeatable beachfront views. More of an asian-fusion menu.

Downtown San Diego (Gaslamp / Little Italy)

  • Juniper & Ivy – Modern American, chef-driven dining. Highly recommend the Black Cod Miso!
  • Born and Raised – Sleek steakhouse with serious style. Definitely a splurge option here, but worth it for a nice steak.
  • Kettner Exchange – Rooftop vibes with small plates and cocktails.
  • Animae – Asian-inspired fine dining with glam décor.

Bars & Nightlife

Coffee & Casual Spots

  • Better Buzz Coffee – A San Diego favorite, especially for their “Best Drink Ever.”
  • Bird Rock Coffee Roasters – Local roaster with award-winning beans.
  • James Coffee Co. – Hip Little Italy coffee spot perfect for fueling up before exploring.
